  Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen): A Transformative Journey By Raj Kishor Kustwar Srinagar: Launched in 2014, the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen)  has been a landmark initiative driving a behavioural shift across rural India. Its first phase focused on eliminating open defecation, while the ongoing Phase-II places a sharper lens on sustainable sanitation, with an emphasis on Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM), environmental sustainability, and community participation. In the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, the mission has made remarkable strides despite geographical, climatic, and infrastructural challenges. With two administrative divisions (Kashmir and Jammu), 20 districts, 285 blocks, and over 6,216 villages, the region presents a complex yet inspiring model of rural sanitation advancement.               (BDO SK Pora Syed Jaasirah Syedain (JKAS) along with her team)  Block SK Pora in central Kashmir’s Budgam district has seen a major transformation in sanitation and waste management because of the ongoing community involvement and door-to-door (D2D) initiatives as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin. What started as a response to long-standing issues has grown into a community-focused movement for cleanliness and responsible waste management. Challenge Before the intervention The block faced several problems like scattered garbage, open dumping, legacy waste accumulation, and a lack of public awareness about waste segregation and hygiene practices.
