Block SK Pora in central Kashmir’s Budgam district has seen a major transformation in sanitation and waste management because of the ongoing community involvement and door-to-door (D2D) initiatives as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin. What started as a response to long-standing issues has grown into a community-focused movement for cleanliness and responsible waste management.

Challenge Before the intervention

The block faced several problems like scattered garbage, open dumping, legacy waste accumulation, and a lack of public awareness about waste segregation and hygiene practices. These issues harmed environmental health and lowered the overall quality of life in the block. To tackle these increasing concerns, the Block Administration has chosen a phased and inclusive approach.

The initiative began with biweekly clean-up drives to clear old waste and visibly improve public spaces. At the same time, comprehensive Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities are carried out to raise awareness and encourage behavioral change through Nukkad Nataks, Radio Jingles, announcements on loudspeakers mounted on our vehicles and use of other platforms like painting competition in schools and religious preachers.

In addition, the Block Development Officer, SK Pora, keeps on conducting motivational programs, rallies, and awareness meetings involving community members, students, and local stakeholders. These activities highlights the importance of cleanliness, hygiene, and personal responsibility in keeping the environment clean.

Door-to-Door Engagement-Turning Point Building on this momentum

A comprehensive Door-to-Door (D2D) waste recovery program has also started to establish waste collection and segregation at the household level. Although there were challenges both in terms of operational and financial recovery (user charges), the administration remained committed. Understanding the value of personal outreach, the BDO took the initiative to visit homes directly. Motivating families, listening to their concerns significantly encouraged their full participation. This direct engagement has built trust, ownership, and cooperation in the community.

Impact and Way Forward

The D2D initiative has led to improved cleanliness across villages and communities, greater public understanding of waste segregation and hygiene practices and higher community involvement in sanitation efforts.  This has led to the gradual changes in behavior among the people and the progress made so far lays a solid foundation. With ongoing IEC efforts and increasing community support, Block SK Pora is on its way to a cleaner, healthier, and more responsible future.

The story of Block SK Pora shows that effective leadership combined with community participation is essential for achieving lasting sanitation results. The Door-to-Door initiative represents a promising model of grassroots transformation, fueled by determination, engagement, and shared responsibility.
