Explained. What is Johkasou?
1- Introduction of Johkasou Technology in Jammu & Kashmir
Strengthening ODF Plus through Scientific Liquid Waste Management (LWM) Under Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen (SBM-G) Phase II, the Directorate of Rural Sanitation, Govt of J&K, is committed to sustaining Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and advancing ODF Plus through scientific Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM).
As part of
this initiative, Johkasou Technology, a proven Japanese decentralized
wastewater treatment system, is being introduced in selected districts – Jammu,
Budgam, Samba.
This pilot
implementation aims to demonstrate an efficient, decentralized model for
domestic wastewater treatment in rural and peri-urban areas.
2- What is Johkasou?
“Johkasou” means “Purification Tank” in Japanese. The
technology primarily caters the areas without centralized sewerage
infrastructure.
It is an approved, compact on-site wastewater treatment
system that treats:
- Toilet
wastewater (Blackwater)
- Kitchen
and bathroom wastewater (Greywater)
3- Technology Overview:
Johkasou uses advanced biological treatment processes,
including:
- Anaerobic
microbial digestion
- Aerobic
biological treatment (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor)
- Membrane-based
filtration (in advanced models)
- Disinfection
chamber
Key Components:
- Gravity
Separation Chamber
- Anaerobic
Chamber
- Aerobic
Moving Bed Chamber
- Disinfection
Chamber
The treated effluent meets prescribed environmental
standards and can be safely discharged or reused for non-potable purposes.
4- Relevance to SBM-G Phase II Objectives:
The introduction of Johkasou directly contributes to the
goals of SBM-G Phase II:
✔ Sustainability of ODF Status
Ø
Prevents contamination of water bodies and
surroundings by ensuring proper treatment of household wastewater.
✔ ODF Plus Villages
Ø
Supports safe and scientific Liquid Waste
Management (LWM) at village level.
✔ Environmental Protection
Ø
Reduces pollution load on rivers, lakes, and
groundwater sources.
✔ Decentralized Infrastructure
Ø
Provides a cost-effective and low-footprint
alternative to large, centralized sewage treatment plants.
✔ Climate & Resource Efficiency
Ø Lower energy consumption and reduced carbon footprint compared to conventional systems.
5- Way Forward:
The pilot implementation in Jammu, Budgam, and Samba
will:
- Demonstrate
technical feasibility in J&K conditions
- Strengthen
decentralized Liquid Waste Management models
- Support
sustainable rural sanitation infrastructure
- Provide
a replicable model for scaling across J&K
